Exuma Island Realities: Power, Water, Groceries & Cash Essentials

Exuma's out-island infrastructure is part of what keeps it undeveloped and beautiful — but it also means the mainland assumptions about power, water, and groceries don't quite apply. Here's what to actually expect.

Power

The local grid experiences periodic brownouts, more frequently during hurricane season. It's worth asking any villa you book whether it has backup power.

Water

Most homes run on rainwater cisterns rather than municipal supply. A well-maintained system runs through filtration, and water pressure is generally strong, but it's worth confirming before arrival.

Groceries

Fresh produce and grocery stock arrive by mailboat on a set weekly schedule, so shelves at local stores can run thin in the day or two before the boat comes in. Several of our hosts offer grocery delivery ahead of your stay — ask when you book.

Cash

ATMs are limited outside George Town, and a number of smaller vendors and captains are cash-only. Bring US dollars in small bills; they're accepted everywhere alongside Bahamian dollars.
